Introduction to Our Fields

Matthew Schuller- History

What is the study of history?  In simpler terms, history looks at past events, people, groups, and locations in order to research and analyze the effects on humans, using these findings to learn how the modern world is influenced as a result.  A sub discipline of humanities, history is divided into several categories based on an individual’s specialization.  Such specializations include cultural history, global history, art history, and so forth.

My specialization, American history, is exactly what it sounds: the study of significant American events, individuals, and places that have formed the United States of America as it is in today’s world.  American history is examined from its earliest days, typically beginning with Christopher Columbus, followed by the nation’s time as a collection of British colonies leading up to the Revolutionary War for Independence, and the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries before traveling to current age.  Various conflicts and reforms are examined alongside important figures and locations, studying them and learning how we as Americans can proceed to build a better future for our children.  As one of the leading nations of the free world, the goal is to preserve the past and learn from it to create a possible tomorrow for the country and ultimately, the global community.

Fatima Deen - Psychology & Neuroscience

What is the study of Psychology? Psychology by definition, is the study of mind and behavior.

It is a fairly new science with many sub-fields. Due to the diversity of the subject it is constantly changing.

What is Neuroscience? It is the study of how the brain and nervous system develop and related behavior and cognitive functions. Neuroscience not only focuses on regular functions but also what happens when people have neurological, psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders.

As you can see the two fields intertwine a lot, due to the focus in brain and behavior. My concentration is human development and health which basically looks into any disorders or functions that revolve around well being. As humans, we function based on our cognitions and physiology so it's important to be well aware of how and why we process things the way we do, and the fields of Psychology and Neuroscience that will guide you with the necessary information.

Samreen Singh, Matt V., Ben- Government and International Politcs

The study of Government and International Politics draws from just about every aspect of the world as a whole. It spans social, political and economic factors that affect how states across the world function and interact. These factors are instrumental when it comes to understanding how governments come to be and are structured, and that matters - for even minute changes in how a government works or is organized can profoundly affect the human condition in its domain.

Rodrigo Lora- Criminology Law and Society

What is Criminology Law and Society?

Criminology, Law and Society is a dynamic, multidisciplinary unit.  Students at the graduate and undergraduate level develop strong foundations in research, methods, theories and systems of justice, criminology and crime policy, security, and law and society. They graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the causes and consequences of crime and injustice, the responses by criminal and civil justice institutions, and what works to improve social conditions among affected individuals, communities, organizations, and countries.
